Frenectomy

Sometimes the frenum is attached between the upper or lower front teeth causing a diastema or space to develop between them. Orthodontists request frenectomies in this situation to prevent the recurrence of a diastema between the front teeth. A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure which is performed under local anaesthetic and the recovery time is usually fast with good healing.

A frenum can in some cases cause a type of lip adhesion making it difficult to clean around the front teeth which can lead to periodontal problems.
