Dental Hygiene
Our hygienists are specifically trained in the prevention and treatment of periodontal disease, which is the main cause of adult tooth loss. They also give advice on all aspects of oral hygiene.
Our hygienists provide regular maintenance on a three to four monthly basis for patients after the completion of periodontal therapy. These maintenance visits help to prevent the need for more time consuming and costly periodontal treatment.
Hygienists carry out the following:
- Demonstrate effective tooth brushing technique to remove plaque without causing tooth wear and receding gums.
- Discuss the latest oral hygiene products
- Offer advice on the best aids to clean between your teeth
- Treat and prevent periodontal disease
They carry out a detailed explanation of periodontal disease including the following:
- Oral hygiene instruction.
- Removal of soft plaque and hard (calculus) deposits
- Discuss secondary factors that may contribute to periodontal disease, for example smoking, diabetes, osteoporosis and stress
- Discuss how periodontal disease could affect or complicate other health problems, for example heart disease
They help with the prevention of tooth decay (caries) and erosion by doing the following:
- Explain the reasons for tooth caries and erosion.
- Give dietary advice on how to reduce sugary and acidic food and drink.
- Give advice on fluoride toothpastes and apply fluoride varnish to help to reduce tooth hypersensitivity after treatment and remineralise enamel that shows early signs of caries or decay.
Help you to have a clean and healthy mouth by doing the following:
- Polish the teeth to remove food and drink stain
- Help to change red and inflamed gums to a healthy pink
- Stop gums from bleeding when brushing
- Prevent teeth from becoming mobile and drifting
- Prevent unpleasant tastes and bad breath by the accumulation of bacteria in the mouth
