The aim of periodontal treatment is to arrest bone loss, gum loss, and the loss of periodontal ligaments around your teeth. Ultimately, periodontal treatment aims to improve the long-term prognosis for your teeth. Deep cleaning of your teeth will be provided under local anaesthetic by Dr. O’ Dea or by one of her periodontally trained hygienists. The mineralized bacterial deposits on the root surfaces of your teeth will be removed. This deep cleaning may be performed in conjunction with an adjunct such as a sulphonate-derived desiccant, a local delivery antibiotic, or cross-linked hyaluronic acid if required to improve your response to treatment.
After this treatment, some patients may experience tooth hypersensitivity, further gingival recession when there’s a reduction in inflammation, and an increase in the spaces between the teeth affected by gum disease. A post-operative protocol will be provided which lists the products you should use following this therapy to help minimize some of the aforementioned symptoms.
