WELCOME TO OUR SPECIALIST PRACTICE

Our practice is limited to Periodontics and Implant Dentistry. We have an experienced and conscientious team committed to providing the highest standard of care for our patients. Good teamwork is the key to success and we work together with our patients to achieve and maintain the best results possible.

Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss and our team endeavour to arrest bone loss, reduce deep periodontal pockets around teeth and reduce gingival inflammation. Periodontal health is the foundation of dental health and is required before more complex dental treatment such as dental implants, crown and bridgework or orthodontics can be provided.

  • PERSONALISED CARE

FAQs

How successful is periodontal treatment?

Our team are highly motivated and committed to achieving the best possible results for our patients. In order to optimize the response to periodontal treatment each patient is risk assessed by Dr. Mary O’ Dea. Every patient needs to practice excellent oral hygiene as plaque or bacterial deposits on teeth are a major cause related factor in periodontal disease. Toothbrushing will be demonstrated by Dr. O' Dea or one of her hygienists and detailed instructions issued so that optimal plaque control can be practiced at home. Risk factors such as genetic predisposition, diabetic control, smoking and osteoporosis will be addressed.

How long does the treatment take?

This depends on the level of complexity associated with your periodontal disease or the extent of bone loss in a site that requires a dental implant. The first step involves agreement on a treatment plan and then preparing you for your periodontal therapy so the best possible results can be achieved. Non-surgical periodontal therapy is usually provided in two visits by either Dr. O' Dea or one of her hygienists. The response to this treatment is evaluated by Dr. O' Dea three months later. More complex periodontal treatment if it’s required or dental implant therapy can only be provided when periodontal health and stability has been achieved.

The length of time for dental implant therapy is dependent on a number of factors such as the bone available in the site for a dental implant, periodontal status and your medical history. Each patient’s case is assessed and a time line given based on clinical and radiographic findings as well as risk factors.

Is the treatment painful and how long is the recovery?

Good anaesthesia is provided so you should not feel any discomfort during your procedures. In the event that you feel discomfort during treatment additional local anaesthetic will be administered. If non-surgical periodontal treatment is provided you should be able to return to work and resume normal activities once the anaesthetic has worn off. There may be some tooth hypersensitivity for a number of weeks after deep scaling but if you follow Dr. O'Dea's post-operative protocol this symptom can usually be prevented and if your periodontal disease is very severe symptoms can be managed.

If periodontal, bone grafting or dental implant surgery is provided there may be some post-operative swelling and bruising. As a result, these procedures are usually provided on a Thursday so you can rest and recover over the weekend. Most patients are able to return to work on Monday if they follow the post-operative surgical protocol.

Is treatment covered by insurance?

This depends on the level of cover you have with your insurance provider and you will need to investigate this with them. Some patients have specific dental insurance whilst others may have a portion of their surgical fees covered by their general health insurance. Dr. Mary O’Dea is registered with:

VHI: VHI Healthcare

Irish Life Health Insurance:    Irish Life Health
